Round 1 — Concavity Check

Read the weld symbol, select the correct concavity gauge, and place it on the weld. Does the weld face break the plane of the gauge's straight edge?

D17.1 Concavity Criteria

Required Leg Size1/2" (0.500")
Gauge CheckStraight edge on toes
Accept IfFace flush or convex
Reject IfFace dips below edge

Inspector's Tip

Place the concavity gauge so its straight edge bridges across the two weld toes. If the weld face dips below (concave past) the straight edge, the concavity is unacceptable. If the face is flush with or bulges above the edge, it passes.
